Practicing What We Preach | Sustainability

The terms "Ethical" and "Sustainable" have almost become synonymous with shopping small, but unfortunately, the terms are often used solely as a marketing tool.

Here at Modern Raised, we truly try our best to practice what we preach when it comes to operating a sustainable business. Keep reading to find out more about our 100% sustainable packaging and a little spotlight on our favorite ethical brands.

Our packing is 100% sustainable and everything down to our shipping labels are either recyclable or compostable. Did you know any cardboard or paper products can't be recycled if they have stickers or plastic tape on them? That's why we choose to use water-activate paper tape and compostable labels!

  • Our custom packaging TAPE is made from 100% recycled content and is water-activated, meaning that the surface isn’t coated in gloss or wax, so it can be composted!  It's also printed with soy inks, an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum based inks. Soy-based inks are made from soybeans, which is a renewable resource, and printing with these inks produces more vibrant colors, and does not leave behind petroleum based products while decomposing. Soy inks also have low levels of VOCs, which reduces air pollution during the printing process.
  • Our STICKERS are made from cellulose fiber where the active acid pulp is eliminated during processing. The pulp is also lignin- and sulfur-free, meaning that our ink won’t transfer from the stickers and the paper won’t leave behind any of these chemicals when decomposing. The paper is FCS certified and the design is printed using soy based inks as well!
  • We are also proud to use ZERO WASTE SHIPPING LABELS! These labels all have a Recycle Compatible Adhesive, making it easy for recyclers and paper pulpers to process packages with these labels on it. Plus, the liner they come on is 100% recycled and curbside recyclable! Traditional silicone coated release liners are notoriously frustrating and problematic for sustainable businesses. They are extremely difficult to recycle, so they inevitably end up in the landfill.
  • Our comPOST Packs are the perfect alternative to polymailers! They are plant-based and are certified home compostable AS 5810 which includes a worm toxicity test!

While not every brand we carry is committed to 100% sustainable production, we do our best to seek out the most earth-friendly makers we can find. Below are some of our favorites!

Main Sauvage products are entirely handmade, in a fair trade workshop in Bolivia, which offers good working conditions and a fair income to women who can neither read nor write. This stable employment contributes to improve the living conditions of families and ensuring the schooling of children. Their soft toys are made of pure Baby Alpaca wool, a renewable, highly ecological natural fibre, and are stuffed with recycled plastic bottle fibres. Natural colors of alpaca are used as often as possible, otherwise, when dye is essential,  all other colours are made with eco-responsible, non-toxic dyes.

By Billie designs are produced sustainably across two factories in China + India. These two factories were initially selected as they share the same values and standards of economic viability, environmental respect, and social  equity which are at the core of the By Billie ethical journey.

Grech & Co. is built on the philosophy of Sustainability for our environment and for our Children's future.  For that reason, their collections are made with recycled, organic, and other environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. It is also their great hope to shift the ideals that lead to Consumerism and Over Consumption within our industry. They have made it their mission to continue to adopt ethical practices that demonstrate our love for Humanity and Mother Earth.

We are committed to continually doing better as a company for this earth and for our children. If you ever have any question, concerns, or recommendations on how we can better live out our sustainability promise, please reach out to us at
